Becoming the Calm in the Chaos

How to Stay Centered When the World Feels Unsteady

Even if you're like me and have greatly reduced your exposure to the media, it’s hard to ignore that the world feels a bit intense lately. From global shakeups to personal plot twists, there’s a sense that everything is shifting…and fast. Whether you're highly sensitive or just generally paying attention, it’s easy to feel emotionally flooded by it all.

In times like these, nervous system regulation isn’t optional, it’s required! Yes, daily practices like meditation and breathwork can help, but as the volume of external chaos gets turned up, we’re being asked to step into a whole new level of mastery.

So how do you stay centered when it feels like the ground is moving?

Here are a few practical ways to stay centered — and help others find theirs too:

1. Anchor into your body.
Stress pulls us into our heads. The fastest way out of spiraling thoughts is to drop into sensation. Try this: place one hand on your heart and the other on your belly. Breathe deeply and slowly. Feel your body rise and fall. Even two minutes of this can shift your entire state. (We practice this every weekday at 11:11 in Harmoneum if you care to join us!)

2. Choose your focus deliberately.
In a chaotic world, your attention is a form of currency. Spend it wisely. What you focus on grows, so instead of doom-scrolling or replaying worst-case scenarios, shift your focus. Look for beauty, kindness, synchronicities. Even recalling a happy memory can help your system regulate.

3. Create micro-moments of stillness.
You don’t need an hour-long meditation to find peace. You need presence. Try sprinkling 30-second check-ins throughout your day: pause, breathe, and ask yourself, “Where is my energy right now?” Then gently choose to come back to calm.

4. Be a lighthouse, not a sponge.
It’s easy to absorb the negative energy around you, especially if you’re empathic. But you’re not here to match the chaos. You’re here to reflect calm. Ground your energy before entering intense spaces. Visualize yourself radiating peace, and others will naturally attune to it.

5. Speak peace into the room.
When people around you are being reactive, your presence can be the pattern interrupt. You don’t need to fix everything, you just need to be the one who breathes deeply, listens fully, and gently redirects the tone. Ask “What’s needed right now?” or “How can we bring ease into this?”

6. Remind yourself (and others) that change is not collapse.
I believe much of the current chaos is part of a larger reordering. What feels like a breakdown is often a break-through in disguise. When you adopt that perspective, you help others feel less afraid and more empowered to navigate what’s next.

The truth is, we’re all being stretched right now. But that stretching is part of our evolution. You don’t need to know all the answers. You just need to stay centered. And from that place, you’ll find the clarity, peace, and presence to guide others, too.

The world doesn’t need more panic. It needs more people who remember how to breathe.

In harmony,
